Summary

"A true genius 。 。 。 Roald Dahl is my hero" - David Walliams

Danny lives in a caravan with his father, the most marvellous and exciting father any boy ever had。

All the land around them belongs to Mr Victor Hazell, a rich snob with a great glistening beery face and tiny piggy eyes。 Nobody likes him, not one-little bit。

So one day, Danny and his father concoct a daring plot that will give the old blue-faced baboon Victor Hazell the greatest shock of his life - so long as they don't get caught 。。。

This was a cute family story。 I especially liked the relationship of trust between Danny and his father。 The plot wasn't particularly elaborate, but it was cozy and easy to read and enjoy。 This was a cute family story。 I especially liked the relationship of trust between Danny and his father。 The plot wasn't particularly elaborate, but it was cozy and easy to read and enjoy。 。。。more

Beautiful relationship between father and son, which you wouldn’t have seen much back in 70s。

I adore Ronald Dahl。 This book, is about a father and his son, it is funny, heartwarming and unusual! My 10 year old son and I read this together, he says it’s a 5 out of 5, but I say 4 out of 5!

One of Dahl’s best stories。

A fantastic book, great book for childrens。 Not a long story, can be finished by a week f you read fast。 Talked about the small child Danny, who lived in a filling station and his father's story about "poaching"。 A fantastic book, great book for childrens。 Not a long story, can be finished by a week f you read fast。 Talked about the small child Danny, who lived in a filling station and his father's story about "poaching"。 。。。more

My favourite Dahl。 To me it's the most mature, charming and well written of all his novels。 There's less of the extreme and manic that you find in eg the twits, but just the delightful story of a father's love for his son。 My favourite Dahl。 To me it's the most mature, charming and well written of all his novels。 There's less of the extreme and manic that you find in eg the twits, but just the delightful story of a father's love for his son。 。。。more

I was sure I hadn't ever read this when I started。 I know for certain it's not in my parents' house, and I don't remember reading it at school or anywhere else。 But when I started reading about pheasants, I started getting the vague feeling of familiarity that always comes when reading books from childhood。I didn't remember many specifics。 In fact, I didn't remember pretty much anything until after I'd read it, when I couldn't believe I hadn't remembered it。 I genuinely enjoy the feeling; its co I was sure I hadn't ever read this when I started。 I know for certain it's not in my parents' house, and I don't remember reading it at school or anywhere else。 But when I started reading about pheasants, I started getting the vague feeling of familiarity that always comes when reading books from childhood。I didn't remember many specifics。 In fact, I didn't remember pretty much anything until after I'd read it, when I couldn't believe I hadn't remembered it。 I genuinely enjoy the feeling; its completely unique and not one you get often (unless you have a habit of re-reading kids' books, like me)。 I still can't quite remember where I've read it before, though。In terms of the actual story: it's great。 It seems to be set in the same half-universe that many of his other stories are set in, seen as they reference some of the other books。 Is it perhaps Danny's dad telling the story in the BFG? Either way, it's nice that they're all connected, and adds a little something when you read the whole body of his work - at least, his children's stories。 I'm yet to start the adult ones, but I'd be surprised if they have much in common with Danny or Charlie。Like many of Dahl's, it's the sort of story that I'm not sure would get approved today: glamourising theft with a few other petty crimes thrown in there。 But I think that's why kids love his books, precisely because of this desregard for the proper。 It's great to read as an adult, too, but it does leave me with a hankering for roast pheasant with bread sauce。。。 。。。more

Well, this was just what the doctor ordered。 Thanks again, Katherine ;) It's tricky to find books that my kids will all appreciate, given their vastly different tastes in genres, but this fit the bill perfectly。 It was humorous, sweet, and really allows Dahl's amazing storytelling to shine through without the outrageous/fantastical that is in most of his other books。 My kids have already picked up some of his other books to read on their own and I will probably read a few more of the shorter one Well, this was just what the doctor ordered。 Thanks again, Katherine ;) It's tricky to find books that my kids will all appreciate, given their vastly different tastes in genres, but this fit the bill perfectly。 It was humorous, sweet, and really allows Dahl's amazing storytelling to shine through without the outrageous/fantastical that is in most of his other books。 My kids have already picked up some of his other books to read on their own and I will probably read a few more of the shorter ones aloud this summer。 I'm also tucking him away as a possible author for audio books when we travel。 。。。more

Sweet book and a fun little adventure。 So different from Dahl’s fantasy work, but still lovely storytelling。 Really beautiful depiction of a strong father/son relationship。 There’s nothing really extraordinary about it, but it is just composed so well, start to finish。 And it is just such a pleasant read with some good humor tossed in in the last act。

I found this book at the library and had never heard of it before。 I had no idea what it was about, but it turned out to be a pretty good book。 You never really know with Dahl whether it'll be great or awful, but this was entertaining and ended happy。 I never thought the kids would be interested in a book about poaching pheasants, but he somehow made it interesting。 There was of course a character who was evil and got some sort of comeuppance, but at least it wasn't violent or over-the-top like I found this book at the library and had never heard of it before。 I had no idea what it was about, but it turned out to be a pretty good book。 You never really know with Dahl whether it'll be great or awful, but this was entertaining and ended happy。 I never thought the kids would be interested in a book about poaching pheasants, but he somehow made it interesting。 There was of course a character who was evil and got some sort of comeuppance, but at least it wasn't violent or over-the-top like in other Dahl books。I really liked Danny's relationship with his father。 They had a modest, humble living but his dad was very open and honest with Danny and he could always talk with him about anything。 It was a very good example for kids of how you can be with your parents, which seemed to be Dahl's whole point since he ended by saying parents should be "sparky" not boring。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Was never the biggest fan of this Roald Dahl novel but upon rereading it this year the story intrigued me some。 Boy and his father hunt pheasants as dad reminisces on the good old days never sounded appealing but hearing how Danny and his father work as a team and treat eachother did。 I enjoyed the father, son bond and how positive they were as a duo and especially talking about women。 His wife for example you feel he really loved。 Overall a fun novel but still not enammered。

Tanya

This was not one of my favourites but I know a lot of people enjoy it。 There is a cute father/son bond and the plot is not as wacky as some of his other books。。。 but it does have its moments。

I’ve wanted to read this book for a long time。 When I taught third grade, we would do a Roald Dahl author study, and I’ve read several of his novels multiple times。 It was one of my favorite things to teach, and I’ve been meaning to read more of his books for years。 I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was fantastic。 I’m glad I finally got to experience this story。 I loved how there were echoes of so many of Roald Dahl’s other stories embedded throughout。 There were so many layers to th I’ve wanted to read this book for a long time。 When I taught third grade, we would do a Roald Dahl author study, and I’ve read several of his novels multiple times。 It was one of my favorite things to teach, and I’ve been meaning to read more of his books for years。 I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was fantastic。 I’m glad I finally got to experience this story。 I loved how there were echoes of so many of Roald Dahl’s other stories embedded throughout。 There were so many layers to the story, but some of the themes that really shine through are family, community, adventure, and rooting for the underdog。 It’s the most realistic story I’ve read by Dahl, with no real elements of magic or fantasy, which actually makes some of the more absurd aspects a little more problematic。 I couldn’t help thinking about how I’d explain certain things if I’d read this with my third graders。 But if you can get past a bit of an irresponsible father and some very shady characters and situations, the story is hilarious and thrilling。 It’s definitely a new goal to listen to more Roald Dahl audiobooks this year! 。。。more

Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors because of the imagination that is found in his books。 These books are perfect for elementary students because Roald Dahl incorporates so many adventures into his books。 This one specifically is a great read!

This was a class reading book when I was 11, back in 1978。 I hated it because I had to read with the class over 6 weeks。 I was reading two a week at home, so I found this so boring!Thought I'd like to give it another go & it was surprising how much I had forgotten, as opposed to books I devoured quickly, where I can't still recall the entire story。Brilliant children's story of the bond between father & son。 Often overlooked in favour of other titles by Roald Dahl。 This was a class reading book when I was 11, back in 1978。 I hated it because I had to read with the class over 6 weeks。 I was reading two a week at home, so I found this so boring!Thought I'd like to give it another go & it was surprising how much I had forgotten, as opposed to books I devoured quickly, where I can't still recall the entire story。Brilliant children's story of the bond between father & son。 Often overlooked in favour of other titles by Roald Dahl。 。。。more
